Windows TCP/IP

This guide is meant to be a reference for learning NT server. It does not replace the more complete MCSE study guides, but is mainly intended as a reference and review help prior to testing. Other than that, the reader may use this guide to gain familiarity with NT operation and structure. This guide assumes basic knowledge in the use of the Windows operating system environment. To use this guide, if a term is not understood, look it up on the terms page.

Information Retrieval Services

  • WAIS - Wide area information server. Used to search for a document in a database.
  • Archie - An indexing and search tool that indexes large numbers of files.
  • Gopher - Uses a menu system to organize and find documents. Uses telnet protocol to get to the data.
  • WWW

RFC Status

The Internet Activities Board (IAB) manages the publication of RFCs. RFC 1800 describes the protocol standards.

Terms

Terms:
  • The Internet Activities Board (IAB) manages the publication of RFCs. It is in charge of the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
  • IETF - Works on Internet problems.
  • IRTF - Coordinates Internet research projects.
  • Interoperability - The ability of one system to communicate with another through applications.
  • NIC - Network Information Center is used to get assigned IP addresses.
  • RFC - Request for comments
  • Packet switching - The process of establishing a path for data packets to take between the sending and receiving device. Routers perform this function.
